Previously, I've posted geocentric elements. During much of November 2002, J002E3 was outside the "sphere of influence" of the earth, and Find_Orb accordingly shifted to heliocentric elements. Then J002E3 started coming back toward us, and Find_Orb switched to generating geocentric elements. Then it went back to heliocentric, and now geocentric again.

Be warned that the satellite motion model for TLEs was never really meant to handle objects in orbits like this. You'll get passably decent positions from TLEs over periods of a few days, but not really as good as we might like.

Ephemeris problem fixed: Those who have been keeping track of this page may know that, for most of October and December 2002, I provided elements based on a truncated arc (just the last few weeks worth of observations.) The reason was that, when I attempted to load longer arcs for this object into Find_Orb, I got ugly residuals.

This is now fixed. The problem was embarrassingly simple: a very slight error in the mass of the Earth used in the program! This would never normally get noticed, but this is an extremely abnormal object.

If you are using Find_Orb, you may want to get the current version of the software, with the Earth mass bug fixed. (Be aware that I've not seen any other object affected by this bug. Asteroids and comets don't linger for weeks near the Earth, and you generally don't have a long enough arc for an artificial satellite to see the effects of this bug.)

After fixing this, I'm able to fit all observations, including the June precovery ones. The "best fit" value for solar radiation pressure is now 7.011x10-5 times that of the sun's inward gravitational pull, which matches the results obtained by Steve Chesley at JPL. (Previous to the fix for the earth's mass, I was getting an SRP factor of almost twice this, with weird variations depending on how much of the orbital arc was loaded.)

The correct value of solar radiation pressure indicates a ratio of area to mass (AMR) of about 0.00902 m2/kg. An empty S-IVB stage is supposed to mass 11300 kg, so the given AMR corresponds to an area of 102 m2. The area J002E3 presents to the sun varies with time, and it's painted bright white, but a hundred-odd square meters is quite reasonable.

Be aware that you can generate customized ephemerides for this object (and many others) using JPL's Horizons system. This has the advantage of allowing you to select your observing viewpoint and time span.

(Updated 28 Dec 2002: new problems) With the fixes for solar radiation pressure and the bug fix for the earth's mass, as described above, the orbit of J002E3 appeared to be adequately modelled. But as you can see in the above residuals, some new and ugly residuals appeared after the 16 December perigee.

It's likely that this is because there is at least one more "gotcha" that has to be dealt with: an SIVB stage is not a sphere, always catching the same amount of solar radiation pressure all the time. It's closer to a cylinder, about 18.1 meters high and 6.6 meters in diameter, roughly the proportions of a tall beer can. When it's broadside on to the sun, the exposed surface area reaches a maximum of about 119 m2, and the exposed area has that bright white titanium paint all over it, reflecting the sunlight and amplifying the solar radiation pressure. When an end faces the sun, the exposed surface area drops to a mere 34 m2, and I suspect it doesn't have that nicely reflective paint on it.

All of this means that we could expect the SRP to reach a minimum when J002E3's rotational axis is perpendicular to the line pointing to the sun (that is, when J002E3 rotates such that the ends "point" straight at the sun, alternating, during each rotation). It should reach a maximum in between the minima. As a test, I decided it would be good to assume that the SRP was a function of J002E3's ecliptic longitude:

SRP = SRP0 * (1 + amplitude * cos( 2 * (lon - lon0))) 

This would mean that J002E3 has an "average" solar radiation pressure of SRP0, fluctuating by 'amplitude' as it orbits the sun. Seemed like an excellent idea to me, and revising my code to solve for 'SRP0', 'amplitude', and 'lon0' gets me the following solution:

This indicated that the SRP varies by about 2.9% around an "average" value, reaching a maximum at ecliptic longitudes 348 and 168 (and a minimum at longitudes 78 and 258). There is a good drop in the RMS error, and I don't think this idea is totally stupid. But I also don't think it is the full story. The method worked passably well in February, but now doesn't get much improvement over the spherical model. I considered switching to a model based on the actual pressure that would be exerted on an 11.6-meter long by 6.6-meter diameter cylinder is computed, including the effect of sunlight bouncing off so as to push the object "sideways". But the fact that the above amplitude/longitude model works so poorly makes me suspect that the axis of rotation varies over time. That could easily happen with a cylinder with highly reflective walls and dark ends, with the SRP exerting a torque that causes a sort of precession. I've figured out how to do this; now I just need to sit down and actually do it, and hope that it models the "real situation" accurately.

"Sphere of influence" defined: If an object is very close to a planet, it obviously makes sense to give planetocentric orbital elements. If it's far away from any planet, it obviously makes sense to give heliocentric orbital elements. The question naturally arises: where does it make sense to switch from one to another? In other words, how far out does a planet's "sphere of influence" extend?

It's not difficult to figure this out from first principles. J M A Danby shows the math in Fundamentals of Celestial Mechanics, pp. 352-353. Basically, for a planet of mass m orbiting a sun of mass M at distance R, you should use planetocentric elements within a distance

r = R (m/M)2/5 

Within that distance, using planetocentric elements (and ignoring solar perturbations) leads to smaller short-term errors than using heliocentric elements (and ignoring the planet's perturbations.) This leads to the earth's sphere of influence extending to about .0062 AU, or about 2.5 times the average Earth-Moon distance. As the ephemerides show, J002E3 regularly ducks within this radius near perihelion, and (usually) ducks outside of it at aphelion.
