"Pseudo-MPEC" for 2010-050B = RV223A9 = Chang'e 2 hardware

On 2019 June 12, the object passed within 5206 km of the center of the moon. That raised the orbital period from about 11.5 days to about 39 days, and caused it to spend much of its time at low elongations from the sun. That, combined with the fact that small errors in the initial trajectory would be magnified after the flyby, meant we had a somewhat poor idea as to where the object was. Fortunately, Jost Jahn was able to recover it in early October, about 45' off prediction. So we're unlikely to lose track of the object again.
As of 2020 Jan 18, it looks likely that this object will have a perigee in mid-July, then go out via the L1 point and emerge into an heliocentric orbit. I am not entirely ready to swear to it that this is what's going to happen -- artsats do odd things -- but I'm reasonably sure of it.
Note that this is the booster left over from the Chang'e 2 mission. Click here for data on the probe for this mission, which spent some months around the moon before heading out toward the Earth/Sun L2 point on 2011 June 9, then later went past the asteroid (4179) Toutatis.

MPC released the initial astrometry on a DASO, and I've since received follow-up data from several stations. Peter Birtwhistle got some data that extended the arc so that the effects of solar radiation pressure became noticeable. As a result, I was able to get orbital elements that show a close lunar flyby occurred on 2010 October 6, with perilune (periselene?) at 3:14 UT. Insertion into lunar orbit supposedly took place at 03:06 UT, so that's a good match (and was the basis on which I was able to ID this object with some degree of certainty).
Peter also commented that the object has a "2.6 mag amplitude (14.2R-16.8R) with a rotation period of 27 seconds."
There was a close lunar flyby in 2011 September, adding somewhat to the orbital uncertainty. (And several close flybys after that, each leading us to a situation where I had to wait for some new data to figure out what the next orbit for this object would be.)
The orbit can also be traced right back to the time of launch, shown in the orbital elements section. The computed perigee is now above the earth's surface. That probably reflects reality, if the object first lifted into a low-earth orbit and then boosted from there. (For those orbits, I used only the data from shortly after launch. With the newer data, we're starting to see some smaller effects such as gradual changes in the area/mass ratio as the object goes around the Sun; these effects make it harder to fit the data as exactly as we might want, so the residuals start to blow up a little.)
