Important note: This is not the same object as 6Q0B44E. The latter is almost certainly a piece of space junk, found at roughly the same time as 6R10DB9.

You can get ephemerides for this object from the Minor Planet Center's Distant Artificial Satellites Observation Page or from JPL's Horizons system, customized for your observing location and desired time span. (In both ephemeris systems, this object is called an "artificial satellite". For reasons I'll discuss below, we're all increasingly confident that it's actually a rock.)

I ran some Monte Carlo variant orbits on this object. All show that the object is newly arrived to the Earth-Moon system, explaining why we've not spotted it before. It had perigees of about 839000 km on 11 September 2006, and will have perigees at about 533000 km on 4 January 2007; 354000 km on 25 March 2007; and 275000 km on 14 June 2007. Then it will leave the Earth-Moon system again.

Propagation backward in time shows that this object passed us in December 1992, on the side toward the Sun, at a distance of about .08 AU. Before that, its previous closest approach would have been to .069 AU in February 1969. Prior to the 12 December observations, it seemed plausible (though not too likely) that the object might be a piece of Apollo hardware. Projecting the orbit past that got a close pass by the earth in the late 50s. Now, with the 12 December data, I can say that the object passed within .09 +/- .01 AU in early October 1958. (This should be determined to still better accuracy with the March 2007 data.)

I'd assumed this was a rocket booster, but the 12 December 2006 observations from (G96) Mt. Lemmon made this harder to believe. They allowed the area/mass ratio to be computed to within about 50%. The March 2007 data from (A60), (G96), and (J95) have narrowed that down to about 5%, and the area/mass ratio is way too low to be a rocket booster. If the object is two or three meters across, it would have a mass of a few tons, about what a low-density rock might have. I hate to say this, because it seems so implausible... but this looks a heck of a lot like a natural object.

Peter Birtwhistle got four more observations of this object on 15 June and more on 18/19 June which have a substantial effect on the orbit. In particular, the area/mass ratio has increased from 0.00082 m2/kg to .0011. Further data from G96 confirms this. In truth, utter stability in the AMR would be a bit surprising, since it would indicate a spherical object. If it's at all potato-shaped, the AMR would be greatest when the spin axis was pointed closest to the sun, and would show considerable variation. It could be that the radar data will support that idea.

The variations in area/mass also make it harder to fit the orbit, and the root-mean-square error has climbed quite a bit with the latest observations included. We've seen similar effects with various artificial objects such as J002E3, the Apollo rocket stage found a few years ago.

Is it a 'second moon'?: I suppose it depends on what you consider to be a 'moon'. I'd call it a chunk of rock that orbits the sun almost all the time, spending only a few months orbiting us just now. Calling it a 'moon' really seems like a stretch to me.

However, it quite likely got where it is as a result of being blasted off the surface of the moon by an impact. (It would be difficult for a "normal" asteroid to get into this orbit, because it's moving slowly relative to the earth and moon. The asteroid would somehow have to lose a lot of energy as it went past us, and this does not normally happen; the object approaches us with a certain energy, and doesn't lose any as it goes by. So it's probably a piece of the moon.)

Is it an impact hazard? I mention this one because a few folks on the Web have assumed that it is. It will make passes by us in 2028 and 2044 (at safe distances), and every twenty years or so after that. Eventually, it'll get caught in the earth/moon system for a few orbits again, and will almost certainly be ejected again, just as happened this time. Eventually, its luck will run out and one of those "orbits" will end up hitting the earth or moon.

But I'd not worry about it. This object is only a few meters across. It would be one heck of a bright meteor if you were close enough to where it hit, and maybe some of it would survive to hit the ground. Maybe there would even be a big enough chunk to knock a big hole in a house underneath it. That's about the extent of the damage that might occur.
