"Pseudo-MPEC" for ZA9872D = 2018 AV2

Various computers of orbits were convinced early on that this was almost certainly junk. The velocity relative to the earth is quite low, and after more observations came in, the effects of solar radiation pressure became apparent.

We tossed some ideas for candidate identifications around. We actually had some brief hopes that this might be the Apollo 10 lunar lander, "Snoopy"; this would be essentially the Holy Grail for recovered interplanetary junk. We had to abandon that hope early on, but were still left with the puzzle of what it was.

The problem is that it was last in our neighborhood in 1988, and there's a good chance it spent some time as a temporarily captured object. That makes unravelling where it came from much harder. It could have come in from some very different direction, spent a year or so bouncing around the earth-moon system, and then gotten ejected, only to come back to us in 2018. So trying to figure out where it was before 1988 is sort of like asking what the original order of a deck of cards was after it's been thoroughly shuffled. You just don't know.

It did help greatly that Arecibo got a radar observation (a Doppler measurement). That gave us a range-rate observation, which constrained the orbit and the area/mass ratio a little more strongly. Also, Patrick Taylor commented that the echo was stronger than what you'd get from a garden-variety rock.

We also got some help from two final observations from Lowell's Discovery Channel Telescope as the object was outbound. This both confirmed the area/mass ratio was that of a piece of space junk, and also should give us a decent idea as to where the object will be when we see it next is 2037. But we still don't know what it is; the orbit is just too chaotic before 1988 to say.
