Much older history of this Web site

  • (28 Aug 1998) An updated version of the Guide 6.0 software was uploaded, with the ability to display Triton and Charon, show the guiding chips for an ST7 or ST8 camera, and to show the constellation occupied by an object in an ephemeris.

Also, Giuliano Pinto (giuliano dot pinto at tiscalinet.it) provided Italian-language versions of the user-added dataset (.TDF) files.

Also, the Charon astrometry software was updated to allow one to use the GSC 1.2 catalog.

  • (24 Aug 1997) Jost Jahn provided German-language versions of the user-added dataset (.TDF) files.
  • (18 Aug 1997) Some discussion of Molniya satellites was added to the list of interesting events to simulate in Guide, and/or to observe in the sky.
  • Jost Jahn provided some files to display limiting magnitude fields developed by the IMO (International Meteor Organization).

Some free C/C++ code for extracting RealSky and DSS images was posted.

  • (15 Aug 1998) Siebren Klein has translated the Help system into Dutch. You can download this BHELP.ZIP file (about 142 KBytes) to your Guide directory, and unZIP it to enable this new feature.
  • Paul Schlyter provided an HTML version of the description of the method of Herget. A few weak points in the original description have also been rewritten to be clearer, more complete, or both.
  • (29 Jul 1998) An updated version of the Guide 6.0 software with the ability to show the distortion of constellation figures by proper motion , set the color of the solid ground toggled on in the Backgrounds dialog, and display visual magnitudes inferred from the B and R magnitudes in the A1.0.
  • (29 Jul 1998) A new pulsar dataset and .TDF (text definition file) for it were posted. Using these, one can easily display pulsars in Guide.

  • For the mathematically inclined, a description of the method of Herget, used for preliminary orbit determination in FIND_ORB, was added.

An updated version of the Guide 6.0 software with the ability to show more 'realistic' stars was posted. Also, the Spanish, French, and Italian versions have been brought completely up-to-date. Finally, Guide can now (usually) compute magnitudes for many satellites, even if the satellite elements lack the necessary data (as happens most of the time).

The users manual for the Charon astrometry software has been almost completely rewritten, finally documenting several features (such as the ability to show CCD images as 'backgrounds' in Guide, and to use Tycho and A1.0 stars for reference stars) that have been lurking in the software, in undocumented or poorly documented form, for a while.

Andrew Gerasimenko has provided a file allowing you to show meteor shower radiants as a user-added dataset .

Fraser Farrell has provided a file allowing you to show the Bennett catalog as a user-added dataset . The Bennett catalog is a sort of Southern Hemisphere version of the Messier catalog.

  • Also, Harry Jacobson pointed out that I had made a mistake in my posting of the Caldwell catalog data he provided. This resulted in objects between 10 and 24 hours in RA all having the tens digit zeroed out, so that they show up between 0 and 10 hours. If you've seen that problem, download the CALDWELL.ZIP file and try again.

HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL (and admittedly only useful to perhaps ten people on the entire planet): Information about doing last-minute astrometry was posted. This is a technique used to vastly improve the accuracy of predictions of asteroid occultations; you get some CCD images of the asteroid and star shortly before the event, measure the asteroid position (and sometimes the star position), and use those measurements to fine-tune the prediction.
