But it was my fault.
I must have changed the font in notepad in WIN 7 (don't recall).

In WIN 7, the default notepad font is: Lucida Console, Regular 10 or Courrier New

In WIN 98: the default notepad font is FixedSys

--> I have set the notepad font in WIN 7 (!) to FixedSys (and to 9pt)
Now it works fine.
