Re: [guide-user] its a non-starter (again)

Hi Lawrence,

It sounds as if this resembles the situation you had back in March 2013,
where you first tried installing the Guide 9 update, which didn't work :

...so you copied everything from another machine, which _did_ work :

Does the problem look similar?

To make sure, I'd suggest you e-mail me the 'startup.mar' file from
the afflicted laptop. You may recall that was one of the key signs: the
'startup.mar' file was only partly written out.

_After_ doing that (I'd appreciate this, as it may give me some diagnostic
info), I'd suggest that you back up the contents of your Guide folder
(just the stuff _in_ that folder; you don't have to back up the folders
underneath it), and then apply the latest Guide _8_ software from

http://www.projectpluto.com/update8.htm

This may fix the problem; applying the update seems to fix a fair
number of odd, undiagnosable errors. If you're feeling brave, you can
then try applying the 'guide8_9.zip' update to give Guide 8 the current
Guide 9 software. This is provided at

http://www.projectpluto.com/new.htm

Quite a few people are doing this, without (to my knowledge) any
issues. This update includes several bug fixes, along with a good list
of new features, so I'd recommend giving it a try.
