This seems to work for most except large open clusters like Mel 111:

* Enable the Central Cross-Hair (Display -> Ticks, Grids, etc...)
* Use some species of the search function to centre the desired object
in the screen (eg "N" -> [NGC number] -> [Enter])
* Zoom out (mouse wheel is quickest) to lowest level at which object is
rendered
* Click as near as you can in the centre of the cross-hair. (If you
don't get it 1st time, a few hits on "N" usually gets it.)
