No immediate idea as to why this is happening, which may be because
I don't use scope.exe. Does this also happen if you run DOS Guide
without going through scope.exe (that is, just running it from the
command line?)

How about other text? Perhaps _all_ text is missing, in menus,
legend, _and_ on-screen? If so, it may be a good idea to delete
the file BITFONT. Do this, and Guide will reload it from the CD.
However, if this works, it probably indicates a corrupted hard drive.
