Re: Guide 8 - Goto Menu

Hi Dave,

That's not a bug; that's a feature.

Sorry to hear you prefer the former "go to" style. I switched
over for several reasons. I wanted to be able to color each item
(red if it's below the horizon; yellow if it's within ten degrees
of the horizon; green if it's more than ten degrees above the
horizon). The switch made most of the lists text-searchable;
for example, you can hit 'M' to bring up the Messier list, then
hit '51' and Enter, and Guide finds M-51. You can also click on
"Mess", "Type", "Const", "RA", etc. to get the list sorted
by Messier number, object type, constellation, right ascension,
and so forth.

I was able to make other improvements specific to different
types of objects. The "Go To Planet" option, for example, now
can give you some quick information about where the planets are,
and can list the planetary satellites in a somewhat more logical
fashion.

The only real drawback is that it no longer looks very Windows-ish.
And that _is_ a concern; I don't break away from the "standard"
Windows look-and-feel randomly. It's usually convenient for people
to be able to say: "Oh, I know how to use this; it looks just
like it does in most of the software I run." Probably the most
common complaint I get about Guide is that it's not sufficiently
Windows-ish.

In this particular case, though, staying Windows-ish would have
meant giving up a lot. I've just tried to make sure that at least
it fits in with the way in which other parts of Guide work
(ephemerides, lists of events, the Help system, and so forth.)
