Hi Bill,
Previously, using my working copy of G8, I went back to Bernd's
suggestion re the Cities folder, opened it with Notepad and found it
did have the 2 Milllion placenames. Since it seemed G9 needed
something to trigger them, I checked the .tdf files and found
ecu.tdf. That worked. I've never messed with Guide's files, and
didn't realiize how many of them are text files.
(Hey, you don't mess with perfection! <G> )
The link you give here for Impact Structures is very incomplete. It
only shows a wide band down the middle of the map. It doesn't even
show Chicxulub, the most famous of all, just off-shore from Merida,
Yucatan. This is where an impact object supposedly kissed the
dinosaurs goodbye and blew them off the earth. If you have this
installed, using geo mode in G8, try looking for this
one. Transferring impacts.tdf to Guide9 works fine.
Lastly, I'm not sure if there is a user_loc.txt in G9. I forgot to
look before I transferred mine from G8.
As for the 2 Million Placenames, it has what appear to be some
historical names for the same town/city. If anyone is interested in
historical research, try going to Anyang, China, at a zoom level of 5
degrees. Drop to 1 degree and watch the screen fill up with red dots
and names. Drop down to a 15 minute field. The label in white is
Guide's postition for Anyang. Above is a red dot and label for
Anyang, surrounded by 5 alternate names. Using the right-click and
drag method shows a distance of 2 miles between two Anyang
positions. This would be reasonable for the distance to the ruins,
but is more likely just a difference in scale between the 2
databases. I'll have to check out some other ruins.
Ancient China had a long history of various emporers changing and/or
renaming the capitol. I don't know if the original database is
searchable by alternate names.
I realize there are very few users of Guide for historical
reaearch. If hints and tips like this are out of place here, someone
please tell me. I won't be offended.
