Hi Steve,

There were several issues. The folks at the Space Telescope
Science Institute, who run the server from which Guide downloads
DSS images, made some changes in URLs. Then it turned out that
Guide had problems if you downloaded more than 999 images, which
could happen very quickly indeed. I fixed both of these.
_Then_ it turned out that my "fixes" needed fixing. Since you've
just jumped right ahead to the current 13 August 2011 version, though,
you shouldn't see any of those problems; you ought to have gone
straight to a perfectly working version.
The "MFC" business simply means that the program was built using
the Microsoft Foundation Classes. Despite that, the actual crashes
are likely to turn out to be something for which I am responsible,
rather than Microsoft.
Running 'get_dss' should have resulted in a file called 'debug.dat'.
If you would please e-mail that file to me, along with one called
'ifile', I may be able to get some insight as to what's happening.
Anyone else seeing problems with DSS images? (Or anything else in
the 13 August version, for that matter?)
So far, I've been doing reasonably well with fixing up bugs in the
13 August version about as fast as they have been reported. I'm
still working on this issue, and the one Kevin Fetter reported (if
he runs real-time animation and the scope indicator at the same time,
crashes happen; each feature works Just Fine when run separately).
Neither of these bugs appears to be specific to the new version,
however; they were apparently happening all along.
My hope is to put a slightly-corrected variant of the "in testing"
version up as the "official" version in a day or two. So if you've
found problems with the "in testing" version, now would be an
excellent time to speak up!
Thanks! -- Bill
