Fix (I'm reasonably sure) for shutdown trouble

Bill J Gray Apr 13, 2011

Hi folks,

I have posted what I am reasonably sure is a fix for the problem
in which 'startup.mar' is clobbered when the computer is shut down
with Guide still running. Try the update just posted at

http://www.projectpluto.com/new.htm

After installing the update, Help... About Guide should tell you
that you're running the 2011 April 11 version.

I've tried it on my XP box. On that machine, Guide was clearly
unable to complete its shutdown cleanly; files were left that
ought to have been cleared off, and Guide never got to the point
of writing out a new 'startup.mar' file. A bit of research turned
up some on-line comments from other programmers seeing similar
issues with their projects, and I tried one of the proposed
solutions. At least thus far, it looks good.

My thanks again to those who responded about this bug. I've had
many inquiries about situations where 'startup.mar' was truncated,
and/or where Guide started asking for a CD even though one had
installed to hard drive. But I really had absolutely no clue as to
what was going on, until it was discussed on this list.

Feedback on the new version is, as always, welcome.

Thanks! -- Bill
