Hi Lawrence, Larry,
I've had several reports of this happening over the last couple of
years. (Which probably means it's happened still more times without
my ever hearing about it.) I still have no idea what's going on with
this bug. I thought it might be due to running two or more instances
of Guide at the same time, with them "colliding" when they shut down.
But I made several fixes that ought to make that situation less
troublesome, and (as Lawrence just found out) it's still happening.
I mentioned this the last time the bug was discussed on this list,
and should mention it again: when this happens, please think if you
did anything unusual when running Guide just before the bug. That is,
did you play with some setting or dialog box that you don't normally
use? If so, _please let me know_. I am currently without any ideas
as to why 'startup.mar' gets clobbered. The ideas I have had (such as
the multiple-instance one) keep getting shot down. I've been unable
to replicate the bug on any of my machines, which of course doesn't
make it any easier to find and fix the problem.
In the meantime, the only fix I can offer is the one Larry suggested:
replace 'startup.mar' with another mark file. (I suggest in any case
that you create a "my personal defaults" mark, one that reflects your
preferences for time zone, lat/lon, display formats, colors, data
shown, etc. This is useful just in case you find someday that you've
gotten things really confused in Guide: you can load up your "personal
defaults" and get things back to the way you prefer.)
Thanks! -- Bill
