RE: [guide-user] use USNO B1.0 from hard drive

Anthony J. Kroes Mar 23, 2011

I've got 180 folders (0-179), but each folder has just 10 files in it (total
1800) and they are named with a .bin extension.

Hmmmm.

It's described at

http://www.projectpluto.com/update8d.htm#b1_from_hard_drive

Please let me know if you run into issues. I don't think there are a
lot of people doing this. Given its size, B1.0 hasn't been distributed
nearly
as widely as Ax.0 or UCAC-x.

It really should be around 80 GBytes, broken up into 3600 files (two for
each .1 degree of declination: an index file with a name such as b1234.acc,
and a data file with a name such as b1234.cat.) These 3600 files should in
turn be broken up into 180 folders, one folder for each degree in
declination.
The above files would be in the 123 folder, covering dec +33 to +34.

A listing of the files in the 179 folder (the one at the north celestial
pole,
dec +89 to +90) is at the end of this message.

It's possible that you have a subset of B1.0. The catalog is loaded with
marginal and false detections, especially down at the faint end. There are
various schemes for filtering out the "presumed bad" objects. If your copy
resembles the above format, but happens to be a lot smaller, then I'd start
to think that you have a filtered version. If so, you'll probably see the
same
files as below, but the .cat files will be smaller (.acc files should be the
same size.)
