YES: But if you plug in your adapter, the system assigns a port number that may well be above 9!

Did you check which port number the system assigned to your port? Several other software (GPS, mobiles etc, bluetooth, GPUSB) also assign virtual Com-Ports. Many of them are no longer in use. If you now plug in your adapter, the system will automatically asign a higher port number. As the lower port numbers are already used up. it may well be that it assigns e.g. COM13 to your adapter. Guide cannot handle that port number and cannot talk to this port.

What you can do is to delete the old unused port numbers:
- open the command line, enter "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1"
- Open the device manager
- Click VIEW menu, select "Show hidden devices"
The unused COM ports will be displayed them, and you can delete/ uninstall them individually by right-clicking on them. If you now plug in your adapter, a COM number below 9 will be assigned, and GUIDE is able to talk to that port.
