actually, for the time being, I put my money on a faulty Serial to USB
converter. I get a "couldn't open COM port", and "position unread" and
so on when trying either "Slew Guide" or "Slew Scope". I've tried to
set things up using ASCOM as well, and communication just isn't
happening.

However, I googled a bit and found a recommendation for a Serial to
USB converter from Astronomiser.co.uk, which is supposedly guaranteed
to work for astronomy applications. I've ordered one, and it should be
on its way across the North Sea soon. The main reason I think the
problem to be the cable, is that the ETX control is working, although
erratic. I sometimes get the same messages there.

I'll get back with my experiences as soon as I've got the cable and
have been able to test things.
