Hi Lawrence, all,
I've been hearing a bit about these mysterious crashes of late,
and still have no real idea why it happens. Two clues:
(1) In at least some cases, the 'startup.mar' file is very short,
missing most of the data that ought to be there. I therefore ask
that if anyone sees this misbehavior, please send me your 'startup.mar'
file.
(2) In at least some cases, the trouble started when the computer
was shut down with Guide still running. Lawrence, is it possible that
happened in your case?
I would recommend trying two things. First, get the current 'in
testing' version of Guide from
http://www.projectpluto.com/new.htm
UnZIP it in your Guide folder. That may fix the problem, if it's
in a corrupted file that gets replaced in the update.
If it fails, there's another thing you could try: copy the file
'factory.mar' to 'startup.mar'. That should have the effect of setting
you back to factory defaults. (Of course, please send me your current
'startup.mar' _before_ doing this!)
Guide will probably ask for the Guide CD-ROM in this case, since
it'll be reset sufficiently to not realize that you've already installed
to hard drive. Just put the disk in the drive, and all should be well.
I'd very much like to know what results you get from this, and which
(if any) of these suggestions actually works. The mystery crashes are
the worst bug currently outstanding, and I'd really like to vanquish it.
