R: [guide-user] Startup.mar file corrupted

Thanks Bill, I solved the problems thanks to Bernd Brinkmannand also
Giuliano Pinto who offered to send me their startup.mar file. Anyhow your
suggestions are correct. I just saved ‘my personal settings’ file! Maybe
also in my case I shut down the computer with Guide open, during one of the
many restart of Windows due to some update… I can’t figure out any other
possibility for getting the file corrupted.

Best,

Claudio

There should be a 'factory.mar' file; copy that to 'startup.mar' and add
the necessary line, and all should be well.

I'd also recommend that, once you have things working again and have
reset your time zone, lat/lon, and other preferences, you should save
a mark named 'My personal settings'. That way, if anything goes wrong
in the future, you can use this (instead of 'factory.mar'). This has
several benefits. For one, you'll get your own preferences instead of
mine. It will already have the right line 18 in it. Also, I use this
trick occasionally even when nothing has been corrupted: if I've reset
a whole slew of things for some reason, and just want to get back to
what is "normal" for me, having a "My personal settings" mark is
_very_ useful.

This still leaves the question of why 'startup.mar' is getting clobbered.
I've now heard from three or four people who definitely have had this
happen,
and I suspect it has happened in many others. I've been unable to get it
to happen.

In at least one case, it seems to have been related to shutting down
the computer with Guide still running. Is that what happened in your case
as well? If not, can you think of anything that might be a clue as to
how 'startup.mar' got corrupted?

Thanks! -- Bill
