Hi John,
thanks for your help.
My main concern is not about the visibility of UCAC3 stars at low levels (it is good not to have the screen full of white dots) but not to have the possibility to see the stars of the built in catalogues at high levels together with the UCAC3 stars.
It seems that UCAC3 at level 8 or higher "deletes" the GSC, Tycho, Hipparcos stars.
What I didn't mentioned before: it happens also to a friend of mine.
Stefano

I'm not entirely sure what you are saying, but if you have tried setting UCAC3 _on_, and setting a small field width, and it still isn't working, then that isn't the solution, because that should work.
Also, if you have two UCAC3 TDFs, two separate ones in TOGGLE USER DATASETS make sure you are always changing the same one when looking for differences.
But given that if you are doing both of those things, what you need to do is load your TDF into a text editor, or even a word processor, highlight it all, copy it and paste it to the end of your next email, even if it gets wordwrapped, then people can read it to see what settings it really has.
There are a couple of newish and new commands in TDFs that deal with zonality in some way, one is volatile but there's a newer one which I forget what it does and what it is called. If somehow the name of this has become typographically warped in the Italian version for the full disk UCAC3 then it won't be performing its function.
Looking at it it looks like the ucac3.idf file ends like this
epoch 2000
type 6
;type sC9d4f00;m-20,-10;l-10,-5;m20,-10;l10,-5;m0,25;l0,13;
;type sCffaa55;m0,-20;l11,16;l-18,-6;l18,-6;l-11,16;l0,-20;
goto spaces # Ignora gli spazi vuoti in 'go to'
goto case # Ignora la differenza tra maiuscole e minuscole in 'go to'
label spaces # Elimina gli spazi vuoti nelle didascalie
field 0.00 10.00
mag lim 202
shown 1
end
Have you removed the ; from those 'type' lines to draw the symbols? If so, put them back to return these to comments and see what happens.
I have "type 6" only and "shown 7" for my system, but I have a home grown filtered (and RA sorted) subset of ucac3 on my hard disk bled off the DVDrom for only north of 40 degrees, as it's pointless to not use the superior ucac2 south of that, and if I'm ever tempted to so do in those regions I just use the vizier download option. The latest thing is not always the best thing, as people who find problems when they buy knew kit that has vista or windows 7 on it often find out.
John
