Absolute Magnitude "H"

Ben Hudgens Feb 10, 2010

Perhaps someone can tell me what I might be doing wrong. I'm a long time user of Guide and I use the MPCORBcr.dat file for all of my minor planet observing and d/l this monthly.

Currently I am using the file dated Feb. 1, 2010. In that file the "H" value for 878 Mildred is listed at 14.6. When I click on the asteroid in Guide for 'more info', Guide's info page shows the absolute magnitude "H" value to be 15.0.

Why am I seeing the difference in these values? MPC website also now shows 14.6 when you run the ephemerides for this asteroid.

Earlier versions of MPCORBcr.dat file from a month ago still listed the H value at 15.0 so the change is now showing up in the newer orbital elements but not in Guide's info page on the asteroid.

There may be other minor planets that have similar differences showing in Guide but I've not come across them yet.

Thanks for any help on this.
