Re: UCAC3 from VizieR in Guide 8 - a howto

Well, it's obviously an OS thing, especially if you can access VizieR from one machine and not t'other whilst using the same Guide config.

I also once lost the ability to do vizier downloads from Guide, simply by following some instructions I'd found for _total_ removal of IE and outlook from my system (uninstalling IE leaves tons of MScrap behind still). Turned out Guide used an MS OS level way of getting the data or something, a dll or summat, so I'd to put that stuff back.

So I'd say check your firewalls, permissions therein for various programs and see if Guide 8 is specifically allowed, and if not make it so, and als check in your virus protection suites etc, etc, coz a lot of this security stuff defaults to not allowing stuff and you've to allow it, but of course most folk don't understand that stuff, that's why they have the commercial applications looking after it for them.

Roger's got it working both ways (toolbar and menu) fine, you've got it working one system, but not t'other.

However, having said that, Dr Clay's telled me he can download CMC14 data from VizieR via Guide 8, and I've checked the Harvard and Cambridge VizieR servers and they already have I/315 (UCAC3) up and running just like at Strasbourg, so who knows what gives?

Cheers

John
