You will probably find that it works better with the current
version of Guide. Last year, I did some work to get Guide to work
in Wine (which is the free version of Crossover), as described here:

You'll see that the problem you mention of not being able to get
at DSS images (or other downloaded items) is described, and a
workaround suggested.

I must confess that I tried it with Ubuntu 8.04, ran into several
problems with Ubuntu 8.10, and therefore never even got Wine installed
on 8.10. Now, with 9.04 a few weeks away, I'll probably wait and
try on that system.
