For a couple of weeks I've been running Guide 8 in Ubuntu 8.04
<http://www.ubuntu.com/>.

First I installed "Crossover Linux standard" from Code Weavers
<http://www.codeweavers.com/>. Crossover is the commercial version of
the freeware Wine Windows emulator.

Guide 8 seems to have near perfect functionality. The only thing
that does not work is the get DSS images from the Internet, but that may
be operator failure. Guide is a huge program and there may have been
other problems I missed. Printing works, as does everything else I
tried. The installation is now a couple of weeks old and seems stable.

Some Notes for other people who may want to try:

1. Code Weavers generic Linux package did not work for me. I had to
download the Debian-specific package.

2. Crossover linux creates a windows "bottle" in which the Windows
program resides by itself. It can create various Windows OS. I chose to
create a Win 98 bottle.

3. Crossover did not create a link to the Guide emulation. I had to
use the "Run Windows Command" from within the Crossover program and
navigate to the Guide8.exe program in the Guide8 folder in the " Guide 8
bottle". Crossover then has an install desktop icon option. Now I can
run Guide with one click from desktop.

4. My Guide 8 CD-ROM is an early version of Guide 8. I haven't
figured out if it's possible to get into the emulation bottle to install
updates or other datasets.
