Re: [guide-user] Display old comets

Michael Mattiazzo Mar 29, 2009

Hello Bill,

Since switching over to a new pc and reloading Guide8, I have noticed a problem with display of comets discovered since 2001.
The file "cometg.dat" located in asteroid subfolder only contains the orbits up to and including 2001 G1 LONEOS.
The downloadable MPC file only contains a list of "currently" observable comets.
Thus there is a gap of about 5 years orbit data.
Is there any way to provide an updated cometg.dat file to include all comet orbits published since 2001?
or alternatively, if this is the easier option, how would I go about transferring the files from my old pc?

Many thanks and hope this doesn't cause too much frustration :)

cheers,
Michael Mattiazzo

Hi Adam,

To display old comets, you should only need to set Guide's date/time
to where you want it, then 'go to' the comet. If the comet is too
faint, you may need to go into Data Shown and use a fainter limiting
magnitude. The comets you mention (and most historical comets in
general) are already included in Guide.
