Sorry, there's a nomenclature issue here: by
'geo mode', I basically just meant 'eclipse/occultation/
transit mode'.

There is also a well-hidden option, 'Toggle Geographic
Mode'. This option is not enabled by default. All it
does is to switch Guide from showing the sky to showing
the earth, with daylight areas in blue and twilight areas
in three bands. (I've had various other thoughts for use
of this mode, such as showing satellite ground tracks.
But right now, eclipse/occultation/transit and geo mode
are the only options.)

To get at that well-hidden option, you need to edit
'toolbar.dat'. As is described at the end of that file,
the toolbar file contains a _lot_ of options that are considered
too minor or too experimental to be enabled by default, but
instructions are given for enabling toolbar buttons.

Once a toolbar button is enabled, you can assign a hotkey
to it, through the Settings... Toolbar dialog. By default,
'm' brings up the Messier list. But as Larry mentioned, you
can reset that.
