Hi Ian,
A couple of things to try: definitely look at
http://www.projectpluto.com/setup.htm
which describes a couple of fixes people have found to
Vista-related issues.
I've certaintly been hearing from folks running into problems
with Guide in Vista (and, of course, with Vista in general).
I am still unsure if it's Microsoft's problem, or my problem.
But I suspect a Guide problem here, in part because the program
_does_ work in general; it's just crashing when it reaches a
specific level.
Please e-mail me the file 'startup.mar' from your Guide folder.
That will let me replicate your settings, and maybe see something
that will cause an "aha!" moment.
Also, I'd recommend taking a look in the Settings menu, in
the Level n.nn: nn.nn Degrees option. This will show you the sizes
for each level. It could be that you've got some odd level size
set for levels 8 and 10. (That used to be a common problem, but
I made some changes to the user interface that made things a little
clearer. It used to be easy to enter a level number when you meant
to enter a field of view size, or vice versa. Not a likely problem
now, but still worth checking.)
It also may be that some data type is being shown that you hadn't
gotten before. So you might go into Data Shown and turn everything
off, then go to levels 8 and 10. If it works without crashing, then
turn a few things back on and see if it crashes. With a few iterations
of this, you'll narrow down the guilty dataset.
