Re: [guide-user] question about designation in the input file for the software find_orb

Hi Onur,
"...I'm trying to solve this with the software find_orb
but it seems like I should define a provisional designation
in the input file. the problem I just have the dates, RA &
declinations for the observations and nothing more"
In such a case, you can simply make up a designation.
For examples, look in the file 'example' provided with
Find_Orb. The last object in that file is Mir; each line
with data for Mir begins with five spaces, followed by
'Mir', followed by more spaces until the observation
date and location are specified.
Usually, when someone sends me data that isn't already
in the MPC astrometric format, I'll edit 'example', and
put their data into some existing records. I'll modify the
designation to give some meaningful name to the object.
Another hint: for each observation, the position of
the observer (latitude/longitude/altitude) is given as a
three-character MPC code, at the end of the line. You
can add new codes to 'rovers.txt'. The file itself gives
some discussion of how to do this.
