That was all I needed -- thanks! The solution is to copy (sudo cp)
symbol.ttf from wherever it resides in the Windows partition (usually
/Windows/Fonts/symbol.ttf )to:

/var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/S/symbol.ttf

... and Bingo! I now have readable Bayers.
