Re: [guide-user] Re: Guide8 not recognizing USNO B1

Hi Joe,

Every now and then, somebody mentions being asked for a
password when opening 'guide8.zip'. That's not supposed to
happen. I'm assuming it means the file got corrupted when
downloaded, but I've heard about it maybe a dozen times now;
that seems like a lot of corrupted files. (And I would
expect that there's some error-checking within a ZIP file,
such that corruption would result in an error message, not
a request for a password.) All very strange!

"...The only problem is my screen is full of 15 digit
RA+Dec positions; I need to figure out how to get rid of them."
Those are the B1.0 designations. There are two ways to get
rid of them.

The way I'd recommend would be to right-click on a B1.0
star. You'll get the usual short dialog giving its designation,
magnitudes, rise/set times, and so forth. Among the buttons
underneath will be a "Display" button. Click on that one.

You'll then get a dialog offering controls over how B1.0
stars are displayed, including a "Label" check-box. Use
this to shut off the labels.

The reason I recommend this is because it's very general.
Any time you see something on the screen in Guide and you want
to turn it off, or change its colors, or toggle its labels,
or just want to find out what it is... right-click on it. If
Guide had one of those "tip of the day" features, this would
probably be the first tip shown.

The second way to get rid of them would be to use Extras...
Toggle User-Added Datasets, then select "USNO B1.0 (from hard
drive)". That would get you to the same Display dialog. It's
nowhere near as intuitive, but if you don't happen to have B1.0
stars turned on and in the field of view, you obviously can't
just right-click on one of them.
