I think I see what happened here.

Guide _does_ use the 'probes.dat' file. But updating it
doesn't automatically cause 'now_comt.dat' to be updated.
You have to delete it or change it a bit (if you change it,
Guide notices that fact and rebuilds it from data in
'comets.dat', 'probes.dat', and its master comet file
'cometg.dat'.)
