I saw your example, did the same way, and almost all is OK.
I say almost, because in one line of the TDF, I would have to write "~r1096116", to tell Guide to display 116 caracters after the 1096 one in the lines of the .dat file.
And then Guide crashed.
To by pass the trubble, I limited the data to 99 caracters, writing: "~r1096 99"; and then, all ran well.
Because of this modification, which reported to the different names of the central star of planetary nebulae, Guide displays one PN, really only one among 1143,
with only 12 names of the central star, among 14 possible!
It is very annoying :-)

I see what you mean; most TDF lines are under 1000 bytes, so
you don't normally see this happen. But it can be done. See
'ecanned2.dat' for an example, in the PGC-99 catalogue section:

~r1279 10 Distance: %s mega^parsec^s
~r1289 10 (%s million ^light-year^s)\n
~r1299 10 ^Galactic luminosity^: %s billion suns
~r1309 10 (%s times Milky Way)\n
