Analysis of reported observations from several tens of observers
across Europe did show that the centerline crossed northern Germany.
However, as seen from northern Europe, Saturn was very low in the sky
(from Stockholm it was only 8 degrees above the horizon), thus the
north-south difference in positions of the observers were greatly
foreshortened, making the central flash visible over a very large
area: from Central Scandinavia down to Central Europe.
