Bill and all,
I purchased the original Guide 8 CDs. This was the 6 December 2001
version with the "install to hard drive" bug on CD1. Bill posted an
update file which corrected this problem. This has worked for many
re-installs over the years, each time installing from CD1,
downloading the new update, and going from there. The last update I
did was to September 16, 2006. It worked very well.
The following is for fresh installs using the current update to the16
February 2007 version. If you want to install anything from the CD
to the hard drive, you must have the current update. Once this is d/l
and unzipped in Guide's root directory, if you try to run without the
CD in the drive, you will get the message, "GUIDE needs the GUIDE
CD-ROM to run." When you click OK, you will get the message, "Near
memory: 7 allocations 55706 bytes." Clicking OK on this message
aborts booting Guide. Put the CD in the drive, boot Guide again,
click "Extras|Install to hard drive... and take the minimum install
at the top of the list. You will now be able to run Guide without
the CD except when you might want to install some other features to
the HD. I realize this "step-by-step" is kindergarten stuff to many
Guide users, but not to all. It may help some.
One change in the current update is a major problem for me, but
probably not for many others. Studying historical Chines eclipses is
difficult because of so many variations in spelling place names, and
in some cases changes in those names. The list of two million place
names downloadable from CD2 gives names for many small villages. On
an eclipse chart, zooming in to a one degree field activated this
list and showed the names and symbols in red. With this new version,
zooming to a one degree field brings up the symbols only. This is
useless without names.
I apologize for the length of this, but hope it helps somebody.
