Re: [guide-user] "Guide needs the guide CD-ROM to run"

Thanks Bill and all for a so quick answer !
Before Bill answered, I had checked my startup.mar.
It was empty (0 Ko, nothing inside). I found a startup.mar in the CD1/text and copy it in my guide folder but it changed nothing => I reput my old "empty" startup.mar in the guide folder
For Bill:
In my maximum.dat, there is only the 3 letters : 01u
I erased it but there is still the same problems "guide needs the guide CD-rom to run", "near memory" and nothing else.
Guide has just recreated a new maximum.dat with still "01u" inside.
I erased again this new maximum.dat file.

For the "third problem" of running guide without the CD, I had installed guide completely with the extra/install to hard drive

So I've just tried to reinstalled the current software as suggested : I didn't know what to do with the files of the guide8.zip, so I put then directly in my guide folder, erasing the old -same names- files. So I have a new startup.mar (3 ko) dating of 16feb2007.
I stopped the computer, restarted it, but my problem is still there, unchanged "guide needs the guide CD-rom to run", "near memory"
Maybe I have to uninstall completely guide from my computer ????

Hi Raphaël,

I think I see two problems here.

One is that Guide shouldn't be showing that "Near memory: 7
allocations 55923 bytes" message. I can see why it shows that
message; I've just fixed this.

A second possible problem involves the file 'maximum.dat'.
I think Guide is writing out a corrupted version of this file.
(On my computer, it's not appearing as a major problem: in
fact, the only way in which I noticed it was that Guide started
up in windowed mode. But depending on what corrupted data got
written out, I assume it _could_ cause this problem.)

So I'd suggest deleting 'maximum.dat'. All you'll lose will
be settings such as the font used for the chart, positions of
dialog boxes, and a few similar items. These will simply
go to their default values. Meanwhile, I'll work on ensuring
that Guide doesn't write out defective 'maximum.dat' files.

You may also find that re-installing the current software
(probably the version at http://www.projectpluto.com/new.htm )
fixes the problem. It will overwrite some of the existing
files in your Guide folder; if one of those is causing the
trouble, using the update will get things working again. This
works surprisingly often.

(A third "problem", of a sort, is that Guide can't run without
the CD in the drive. Once you get things working again, you may
want to use Extras... Install to Hard Drive.)
