Thanks for pointing this out. The indicator will change color as
it crosses solid objects such as the Milky Way (or the objects on the
horizon, or the ground if that is being filled in). And if it crosses
an area that is exactly halfway between black and white, it will
disappear. (If the indicator had gone deeper into the Milky Way,
you would have seen it again.)

In PaintShop Pro, I can see that in your image, the indicator
_does_ go into the Milky Way, but is almost exactly the same color.

I will probably fix this by having the circle part of the indicator
in a slightly different color than red. That way, the "arms" may
vanish, or the central circle may vanish. But they won't both vanish
at the same time.

In the meantime, one possible "workaround" would be to click on a
Milky Way outline, then on Display, then on the "outlined" radio
button. Or, click on an outline, then on OK, and adjust the brightness
and contrast of the Milky Way using the Alt-Up, Alt-Down, Alt-Left,
and Alt-Right keys. (This is discussed a bit at

On my computer, I have the isophotes set to be faint. Even in the
core of the Milky Way, it's not up to the halfway shade between white
and black. So I never saw this problem.
