Hi Lawrence,

I just tried this again, playing around with various things, and
made one (I hope relevant) discovery: if you set MIN_IMG_SIZE=0, then
it goes back to its default value, and you get the behavior you
describe: that image drops out at a two-degree field of view, and is
shown at a one-degree field of view. So set (at least) MIN_IMG_SIZE=1.
(Since a one-pixel "image" isn't terribly interesting, I'd probably
set it to at least MIN_IMG_SIZE=10... but your mileage may vary.)

If that doesn't fix the problem, please send me the files
'startup.mar' and 'guide.dat' from your Guide folder... that may let me
puzzle out what's going on.
