If I understand you well, you could run Guide without the CD-ROM only once
and it worked never again after that ?

Try again to edit startup.mar (I use Notepad to do that):
- edit, save and close startup.mar when Guide is not running,
- browse startup.mar from top to bottom and check that
. it contains only one line 18,
. the line 18 is correct "c:\guide_cd\"
(without quotes and with a final backslash)
