The attached procedure issued in the projectpluto site is no longer
updated since file iii.zip has been removed from the ftp site. Instead
you will find iii.dat. The following procedure has worked fine for me:

1)Download the iii.dat file from the ftp site
ftp://ftp.sai.msu.su/pub/groups/cluster/gcvs/gcvs/iii/

2)Copy the file iii.dat in to the Guide directory

3)Download the file GCVS4.zip from the link
http://www.projectpluto.com/gcvs2004.zip and unzip the two file in the
Guide directory

4)Edit GCVS4.tdf and change the first line from
file d:\raw_data\gcvs2004\iii.dat to file iii.dat

5)Run Guide

6)From the Extra Menù / Toggle User dataset -> check GCVS4

7)Display Menù / Data shown -> Variable off

(27 January 2005) Use of the 'current' GCVS (General Catalogue of
Variable Stars): Guide currently uses an older version of the General
Catalogue of Variable Stars. The current GCVS (herein called GCVS-2004)
includes many corrections, and if you're at all avid about variable
stars, you'll want to use it in place of the version currently used by
Guide. John Greaves has provided a file that enables display of GCVS-
2004 in Guide.

To do this, you should download the GCVS-2004 (about 1.9 MBytes) from
its home at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute in Leningrad. UnZIP it
in your Guide folder. Then download this file to your Guide folder
(about 1 KByte) and unZIP it. This will enable display of the GCVS-2004
when next you start Guide. Look under Extras... Toggle User Added
Datasets, and "GCVS (2004)" will appear among the entries.

You should also go into Display... Data Shown, and turn variables off
in that dialog. This will shut off Guide's built-in variable star data,
leaving only the GCVS-2004 variable stars.
