I had this problem some time ago. In my case, the crashes were of "Guide6
MFC Application" in ntdll.dll. (Note the different .dll from your crashes.)
These crashes were occurring only when I entered a non-viable name in Go
To...Object Name. I reported it here on the list.

Bill answered,

"I've found and fixed this problem. As you stated, "Go To... Object
Name" will crash if you've done only a "minimal install" and don't have
the CD in the drive. Turned out that Guide was looking for a file that
doesn't exist in that configuration. I just revised it to recognize
that the file isn't available."

I responded,

"I only used the stripped down minimal install while trying to find the
reason for what I thought were spurious images. (Thanks for the info on
that.) Afterwards, I switched back to using the full Jun 21 2005 beta with
several datasets on. Even so, Goto...Object name/FakeName _still_ crashes
if CD1 is not in the drive. (The crashes are of "Guide6 MFC Application" in
ntdll.dll.")

I always update to each beta. The crashes had stopped, so I assumed Bill
fixed it, but the problem popped up twice recently. (I didn't notice what
triggered them, or if it was the same .dll. I'm now using the latest Jan 21
2006 beta.

I've since installed XP Home. I just checked guide.exe|properties in
Windows Explorer and found the General tab _still_ gives the application as
Guide6. The version tab gives v1.0.0.1, and the Description given is GUIDE6
MFC APPLICATION. Don't know if this has any bearing on the problem, though.

I recently did a re-install of Guide 8, which may have had something to do
with it. I'm still using the original CDs with the "Copy to Hard Drive"
bug, so I just take the mimimal install, but then always take the latest
update as soon as I complete the minimal re-install.
