I had the same problem a few years ago.
I put it down to not having enough memory and when I had the memory overloaded I
would get a similar problem to yours. If you have a corrupted "startup.mar" you
may run Guide for a while then all of a sudden it fails. You do this a couple of
times and eventually the program gets so confused it won't start at all.

The best solution is to get Guide set up the way you want it, and then BEFORE
DOING ANYTHING ELSE -- save a copy of "startup.mar" rename it to something else
i.e. "Default.mar"-- store in another folder.
When your program fails replace the "startup.mar" with the (Default.mar). Rename
the "default.mar" to "startup.mar" -- then restart Guide.
