Hi Roger,
JPL calls this Tempel 1, which I believe means the first comet found
by Tempel. MPC has junked these discoverer numbers, and calls the object
9P, the ninth known periodic comet. (We're now up to somewhere around
164P.) To its credit, JPL gives this comet the full designation
"9P/Tempel 1" in its orbital database, which should minimize confusion.
With the MPC's scheme, we have 9P/Tempel (the comet Deep Impact is
expected to impact) and 10P/Tempel, a.k.a. "Tempel 2".
