Re: [guide-user] Getting large chunks of B1.0 data from the internet

Patrick J. Madden May 11, 2005

Thanks, Bill. Let me try my luck with the Guide Group here. Is there any user who has a copy of the B1.0 data? I would be willing to buy a 100+ GB drive and send it to you to have you copy the data onto it. I could probably afford an extra external drive for you to make an extra copy for yourself. If anyone in the group can help me out, you can reply to me off of the group at: pmaddenATdioshptDOTorg (substitution the "right stuff" for AT and DOT, of course).
Thanks to anyone who will help an observatory out in the boonies without high speed access.
Clear skies to all!

Hi Pat,

Problem here is that B1.0 is about 80 GBytes in its raw format,
and considerably longer in the text format in which it's provided
over the Internet. Getting an entire hemisphere in that manner is
unlikely to work.

If you can get a copy of B1.0 on a hard drive, in the original
form as distributed by USNO, then Guide will be able to read it,
using the 'in-testing' version described at

http://www.projectpluto.com/new.htm

The first improvement listed is this ability to use B1.0 data.

Actually laying hands on a hard drive full of B1.0 data is another
matter. I gather a gent in Europe (Austria, maybe?) got one and is
selling copies, on USB drives, at cost. But he's had problems
sending them overseas. I'm not sure if it's a customs matter or a
terrorist-under-every-bed paranoia problem. You would have to find
somebody in the US who has the data, and is willing to provide a
copy of it. (Perhaps USNO itself.)
