Re: [guide-user] no more solar eclipses

Hi George,

The solar eclipse function is a little unusual. It is precomputed,
and therefore gives the time of maximum eclipse at the geocenter. (Or
the time when the center of the sun's disk would be seen closest to that
of the moon, if no eclipse would be seen from the geocenter.) It
doesn't incorporate the usual "red means the event is below the horizon,
yellow means it's near the horizon, green means it's above the horizon"
scheme used in many of the other tables in Guide.

So you can't simply look at the table and find out when the next
eclipse will be visible from your location. You _can_ get Guide into
'eclipse' mode, by clicking on the sun, then the moon, then on Extras...
Show Eclipse. (Or you can hit the ';' key. By default, this is a hotkey
meaning "show me a map of the next solar eclipse.")

Once there, you can zoom in on the chart, finding the point on the
earth in which you're interested. Then you can use Extras... Local
Events Only. After that, use of "Next" and "Previous" will not simply
look for the next or previous solar eclipse. Instead, it will look for
the next or previous event visible from that location.
