Re: [guide-user] Guide crash

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the quick response. I've been away from the computer for a day or so, just bought a used Meade 16" Starfinder dob. Something like this happened about a year ago if I recall. Ended up just reloading all of the Guide from the CDs and then did the update.

Attached are the files you requested..

More on this problem. It it not only the lunar.dll that pops up in the Windows error box. I also now am getting similar error with Kernal32.dll . Tried what you suggested, Turned off the comets and asteroids and program now works (sometimes). Turned comets back on and asteroids still off and program still working. Then turned on asteroids and error comes back.

A couple of months back, I edited mpcorbcr.dat and kept only the 'numbered' 85,000 or so asteroids. That abbreviated file had been working without problem. Thought it might be causing the problem now so moved it to a temp folder and put the complete mpcorbcr.dat file back in the Guide directory.

======

update. I loaded in the 'factory default. mar' file and also moved both the comet and mpcorb .dat files to a temp directory. Sometimes it will complete loading and get a couple of more screens before the error pops up. I am rebooting/restarting the computer each time I get the error before continuing to try to find the problem. Hope this info is of help. Hopefully, I will be upgrading the OLD computer before long. I've had this ancient Gateway 450 MHz for too many years now. Am still using Windows 98.
==========

If I do just reinstall Guide, do I only need to use the latest 'update' to make the program 'current' or do I need to install ALL of the previous updates over the past several months.?

Later, Ben

Hi Ben,

I'd recommend e-mailing me the files 'comets.dat' and 'startup.mar'
from your Guide folder. Quite a few comet/asteroid-related calculations
are done in 'lunar.dll', and my guess would be that some odd sort of
data is being passed to it and resulting in a crash. (I say this
largely because you mention just having updated comets.)

Given the comet file and the settings stored in 'startup.mar', I've
some chance of puzzling out the problem.

Another thing to try: as Guide is starting up, hit the space bar
(to stop it from drawing). Go into Display... Data Shown and turn off
comets and asteroids. If Guide now runs correctly, then I'm right in
thinking that it's something related to those objects (and you'll have
something that works, albeit missing some very important objects,
until I figure out where the problem lies). You might then give a try
to turning on asteroids or comets, to determine if either can be
turned on without causing disaster.
