Hi Mischa,

Um. I've not heard of this 'must install under c:\' problem. By
default, Guide has always installed to a non-root folder, either
c:\guide or c:\guide(version number). People have altered that path
freely, and I've heard of only two problems:

(1) If the path had a space in it (say, "c:\program files\guide"),
the installer stopped at the space and only saw the 'c:\program' part.

(2) If you attempted to create more than one level of directory
(say, "c:\first\second\third" where the directory c:\first already
existed, but c:\first\second did not), the installer would crash.

Is it possible that you ran into an installation problem with
Guide 3, then assumed it was still troublesome for later versions
and didn't attempt to install in (say) c:\guide8?

Now, regarding Wine: I'm hoping someone else will chime in here.
I got Wine working briefly on my dual-boot (Mandrake 9.2 and WinME)
box, and got the Windows version of Find_Orb to start (though it
crashed the instant I attempted to load observations into it). I
didn't even get to the point of attempting to use Guide, however,
because Wine destroyed my Windows partition, resulting in a need
to reformat the drive and re-install Windows. (Fortunately, I'd
backed up recently... a move I strongly recommend before use of Wine.)

In theory, Wine looks to be an excellent solution to getting
Guide to run in Linux. I've heard several reports of success, though
one recent post to this list mentioned that it was _very_ slow, for
reasons I've yet to determine.
