Thanks for mentioning this. SpamGuard has caught one legitimate
message already, and doesn't appear to be of any particular use
on this group anyway. To your list, I'd add

4. New users are moderated, and the occasional spam is seen
only by moderators. Existing users have yet to send spam. So
the current, non-SpamGuard-ed system appears to be working just fine.

SpamGuard is now off.
