Re: field rotation

Hi Bill,

I am still worrying about field rotation rates.
When I calculate them for altitude 90, I get an absurdly high field rotation
rate...5399.9 degrees per minute.
Also in GUIDE 8...

Perhaps this is a personal thing...I DO get dizzy looking up straight from
time to time.
But not THAT dizzy...

I am now wondering if there is any place in the sky where field rotation is
faster than at Polaris where even I could calculate it to be 0.25
degree/minute (by the way, GUIDE gives that too)...and if so, where it would
be.

A late but well meant Happy New year, by the way!

Hi Siebren,

Ah, I see... I can save you some time there: field rotation
is momentarily zero when an object is at azimuths 90 or 270
(the "east-west meridian").

Find an object in Guide, then set up animation with the
"horizon" radio button set. Put the chart in "zenith up"
mode, simulating the view through an alt/az scope. Make
sure the alt/az is set to be displayed in the legend. Now
start animating with a step size of minutes to hours.

The field will wobble back and forth (that is, it rotates).
You'll see that it pauses in its rotation when the azimuth is
90 or 270 degrees.
