B-V for GSC, clearing labels
Bill J Gray Sep 25, 2003
Hi Jerry,
Unfortunately, you don't get B-V (or any color data) for
GSC stars. (This is why you can check the "color stars" box
in Star Info, and still have all the faint stars show up in
white.) The folks who created GSC got only one magnitude for
each star... no color data.
I suspect you found the way around this: get data from
another catalog, such as GSC-2.2, that _does_ have some
color data. To shut off those labels, right-click on a GSC-2.2
star, getting the usual "short info" box. Then click on Display.
You'll see a check-box for labels (as well as options to adjust
other aspects of how GSC-2.2 is shown: magnitude limits, color,
fields of view at which it is drawn, etc.)
This is an extremely handy thing to remember, an Important
Safety Tip: if you see something in Guide and want to turn it
off, or change its color, or remove its labels, or almost
anything else, just right-click on it and then on the "Display"
button. I admit that this isn't a 100% solution (for example,
you can't right-click on the "horizon objects"), and it only
works if there's an example object on-screen. But it's quite
helpful in the sort of situation you describe.
