Bill,

Hope the following isn't _too_ far OT.

Billy-the-kid strikes again, eh? I had no BMP problems with Win95 or (now)
98SE.

I was familiar with PSP, so I checked the JASC website, and decided I
didn't want to install a 57Mb program just for screen capture availability.
Freeware Irfan View is all the image editor I need and use for my
photography. I always used Guide's Make BMP feature in the past, and
didn't remember until this morning that IV had some sort of screen
capturing option which I had never checked out. Turned out to be even
better than Guide's, you can save in any format you want.

Everyone knows Irfan View, but just in case: http://www.irfanview.com
The following refers to the latest version, 3.80. There are two methods
for saving, I use the first one.

With Guide showing the image you want to capture, open IV and press C for
the Capture setup options. Check "Foreground window - Client area",
uncheck "Include mouse cursor," leave "Show captured image in viewer"
checked. Minimize IV, press CTRL-f11, to capture the Guide image. In my
case, IV is my system viewer, so the image opens in IV as a clipboard
file, which I can then save with any name in any format and any directory I
choose. Works faster than it sounds.

For the other method, "Save captured image as file" will save the image
straight to any directory you choose in any format you choose. However, it
saves with very long filenames which will probably need renaming, as follows:

iviewcapture_date_13_08_2003_time_13_31_44.png (or whatever format)

I only point this method out in case it would be of use, although I can't
imagine how. Going the clipboard route seems much simpler, so I only use
that.

There is also an "Automatic - timer delay" which may be of some use to
those Guide users who do animations. I don't, so didn't bother to check
this feature out.

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I thought giving exact info might be
something you can mention on the Project Pluto site, now that Billy-the-kid
has screwed up again. Also, I suspect Guide users may run the gamut from
young newbie to jaded old pro!
